Govt releases Rs131bn development funds in first 10 months

ISLAMABAD: The government released Rs131 billion development funds in the first ten months (July-April) of the current fiscal year against the revised allocation of Rs150 billion.

The Planning Commission hopes that the entire released amount will be utilised by the end of June.

A working paper for Annual Plan Coordination Committee (APCC), which is going to meet on Friday for recommending Rs365 billion as federal share of Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) for the next budget, states that since the allocation of ministries/divisions was reduced in certain cases by 70 percent, it was expected that the entire released amount would be utilised by them

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's third nuclear power plant has become operational, a media report said Friday. 

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani Thursday inaugurated the Chashma-2 nuclear power plant, about 280 km south-west of Islamabad. 

Pakistan's first nuclear power reactor started in 1971 near Karachi. The second is Chashma-1 in Punjab and it started in May 2000. 

Gilani said the completion of the nuclear power plant three months ahead of the scheduled time was due to the joint efforts of Chinese and Pakistani teams.

The incident came shortly after Suzanne Mubarak was ordered detained for 15 days in a corruption case, the state-run Middle East News Agency reported.Cairo, Egypt (CNN) -- Suzanne Mubarak, wife of toppled Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, suffered a heart attack Friday after being questioned in a corruption investigation, the manager of the Sharm el-Sheikh Hospital said.
The manager, Mohamed Fatah Allah, said she had been taken to the intensive care unit.
Assem al-Gohary, the assistant justice minister for the Illicit Gains Authority, ordered her detained for "obtaining illegal wealth using her husband's position and political authority."

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — Pakistan’s spy chief offered to resign Friday in the wake of public outrage over the U.S. operation that tracked and killed Osama bin Laden, an incident that humiliated the nation’s army and cast doubt on the capabilities of an intelligence network long believed to be near-omnipotent.

Lt. Gen. Ahmed Shuja Pasha, in what was reportedly highly emotional testimony at a private session before parliament, apologized for the intelligence lapse and said he would leave his post if Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani deemed him unfit for the job, according to lawmakers who attended the session. Pasha said that he had tendered his resignation to Pakistan’s powerful army chief, Gen. Ashfaq Kayani, but that Kayani had refused to accept it, attendees said.

IPOH: World champions Australia are tipped to make a strong impression at the seven-nation Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Malaysia despite fielding a new-look side as teams build towards the London Olympics.

High court moved against YDA


LAHORE, May 7: The Lahore High Court has been moved through a writ petition and a civil miscellaneous application praying to declare fresh call for strike given by the Young Doctors Association (YDA) illegal and also impose a permanent ban on it.
The writ petition has been filed by Muhammad and Ahmad, a public-interest litigation company, through its chairman Muhammad Azhar Siddique.
He also prays that the health secretary be directed to implement the Punjab Healthcare Commission Act of 2010 in letter and spirit, including establishment of Health Care Commission, the Board, appointment of commissioners, chairperson and chief executive officer as required under the Act, in the interest of public and fair play.
The petitioner says a mechanism be also evolved so that illegal strike by doctors and service providers could be dealt with an iron hand.

Four dead as Taliban hold out in Afghan city



KANDAHAR, Afghanistan — The death toll from a wave of Taliban attacks on government buildings in the key Afghan city of Kandahar has risen to four as militants held out into a second day, officials said Sunday.
Violence in the city, seen as the Taliban's birthplace, broke out on Saturday at around 1:00 pm (0830 GMT) when militants with guns and rocket-propelled grenades attacked the governor's office from nearby buildings.
It spread to sites including the local offices of the intelligence service and several police offices as a total of ten explosions including six suicide blasts rocked the city.
Nearly 50 people have been wounded in the standoff, the first major incident since the Taliban announced the start of its annual spring offensive just over a week ago.

HUNDREDS of Syrian soldiers stormed a Damascus suburb early today, breaking into houses and making dozens of arrests



The raids came after thousands of people marched in a demonstration in the area last Friday, demanding the removal of President Bashar al Assad.
Residents who witnessed the raids said the strong-arm tactics were over-the-top because the protests had been peaceful, The (London) Times reported.
"They cut off communications before they came in. There is no resistance. The demonstrations in Saqba have been peaceful. Scores of people have been arrested," said one local, who did not want to be named.
The Syrian opposition has vowed to continue peaceful protests despite a security sweep by the authorities in which thousands of people have been arrested.

Rift in YDA over protest movement


LAHORE, May 3: The Young Doctors Association has disassociated itself from its Punjab chapter and asked Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani to announce a special pay package for doctors of all cadres.
YDA central office-bearers Dr Rana Sohail, Dr Salman Kazmi and Dr Talha Sherwani told the media at the Lahore Press Club on Tuesday that some striking doctors were introducing themselves as representatives of the “so-called YDA Punjab” and bringing a bad name to the medical community.
They said this group of a few doctors, known as ‘striking doctors’ and led by Dr Hamid Butt, defamed the medical community and damaged the nationwide movement launched by the YDA for a pay raise for thousands of doctors working in public health institutions.

Bollywood cheers, jeers Osama's death




New Delhi, May 2 (IANS) Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur feels Osama bin Laden will remain a "mythical dark force" for the US, while others in Bollywood like Ram Gopal Varma, Anurag Basu and Anupam Kher hailed the news of the Al Qaeda leader's death in a US strike in Pakistan.
