Rift in YDA over protest movement

LAHORE, May 3: The Young Doctors Association has disassociated itself from its Punjab chapter and asked Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani to announce a special pay package for doctors of all cadres.
YDA central office-bearers Dr Rana Sohail, Dr Salman Kazmi and Dr Talha Sherwani told the media at the Lahore Press Club on Tuesday that some striking doctors were introducing themselves as representatives of the “so-called YDA Punjab” and bringing a bad name to the medical community.
They said this group of a few doctors, known as ‘striking doctors’ and led by Dr Hamid Butt, defamed the medical community and damaged the nationwide movement launched by the YDA for a pay raise for thousands of doctors working in public health institutions.

“The so-called YDA Punjab called off its 37-day long strike at public hospitals on mere promises of the provincial government,” Dr Kazmi said. He said the government formed another inquiry committee instead of notifying a pay package after the so far longest and worst strike of doctors. He said Dr Butt and his colleagues were responsible for this ‘shameful’ reaction of the Punjab government to the genuine and longstanding demands of low-paid doctors. He said now the same group announced a convention at the Allama Iqbal Medical College on Wednesday.
“YDA will not be part of this convention, which is being supported and financed by principals of some health institutions for their vested interests,” he said.
Dr Sherwani said YDA would launch a nationwide movement soon for the implementation of a special pay package promised to doctors some months ago.
He said YDA demanded a special salary package for all cadres of doctors — at least Rs35,000 for a house officer, Rs80,000 for PG trainee, Rs150,000 for a senior registrar, Rs200,000 for an assistant professor, Rs250,000 for an associate professor and Rs300,000 for a professor. He said provincial governments were planning to give doctors a few thousand rupees in the form of non-practicing allowance. “YDA will not accept this meagre salary raise,” he said.
YDA central office-bearers Dr Ghulam Qasim, Dr Khalid Idrees, Dr Khuda Bukhsh, Dr Ali, Dr Kamran, Dr Asad, Dr Burhan, Dr Sheikh Bilal, Dr Wajid Wazir, Dr Khalid Snawan, Dr Ghulam Murtaza and Dr Hafeez Khan were also present
