KARACHI: At least seven persons, including a sub-Lieutenant and a lady doctor, were killed and 58 others injured in two terrorist attacks on the staff buses of Pakistan Navy in Defence Housing Society, Phase II and Baldia Town here on Tuesday, police said.
Three persons were killed while 37 others injured after a Pakistan Navy bus came under attack near P.N. Shifa Hospital adjacent to Defence Housing Society, Phase-I early morning. The deceased included Sub-Lieutenant Iqbal and lady doctor Nazia
The police said that the bomb was planted in a motorcycle; when a Pakistan Navy bus, carrying staff members, reached near it blasted with a loud bang.
After the incident, Police, fire tenders and rescue officials converged to explosion site and cordoned off the area, meanwhile, all injured were shifted to hospital for medical treatment.
Bomb planted motorcycle was destroyed completely while the bus was damaged partially.
In another terrorist attack, a powerful explosion ripped through another bus of Pakistan Navy in Baldia Town near Mohajir Camp No-3 locality, killing four persons and injuring 21 others. The dead included Muhammad Ashraf and Umer Farooq, Naval employees.
Meanwhile, Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan have claimed responsibility for the bomb attacks on navy buses. Meanwhile, owner of the motorbike used in one of the attacks was arrested.
Witnesses claimed that the bus came under a terror attack but it is still unclear how the attack took place.
Heavy contingents of police and naval force rushed to the blast site and started rescue efforts. The blast site was cordoned off and the dead bodies and the injured removed to the hospitals.
The Senior Superintendent of Police and head of the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) said that both blasts were remote controlled and apparently done by the same group.
The security of the metropolis was beefed up as another bomb containing 10 kilograms of explosives was defused in Baldia Town.
President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, MQM Chief Altaf Hussain and others have condemned the blasts.
Expressing their heartfelt grief over loss of precious lives they said that such cowardly act of terror cannot deter the resolve of the Nation and our armed forces to curb the0 menace of militancy and extremism from our society.
The President and Prime Minister directed the concerned investigating agencies to probe into the incident and submit a report so that further course of action can be taken.
Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah and provincial information minister Sharjeel Memon also visited the site of the two blasts.
Talking to media persons on the occasion they strongly denounced the twin blasts and expressed their profound grief over loss of precious lives. They said that terrorist elements through such activities can’t weaken the government stance and efforts against terrorism.
Governor Sindh Dr. Ishratul Ibad has instructed the Inspector General of Police and the CCPO to investigate the terrorists’ attacks on Navy buses at their earliest and submit a detailed report to him.
Clues found, says Malik
KARACHI (APP): Interior Minister Rehman Malik Tuesday disclosed that ‘good clues’ have been found in cases of twin blasts targeting Pakistan Navy buses here on Tuesday.
“We have found good clues and hopefully will nab the culprits,” Malik said while addressing a press conference at Chief Minister’s House after presiding over a high level meeting on law and order.
“In future, it will be our effort to siege the area of incident and not allow entry of any person at the place of incident to facilitate forensic experts to complete their task,” Malik said.
